Review: Herbal Essence Fresh Balance Shampoo & Conditioner

I'm currently on a major hair care overhaul. Five+ years ago I had no problems with my hair, however I did wash my hair daily - which became more and more annoying over time as that's an hour to get ready. I used the same shampoo and conditioner for about seven years with no problem.

However nowadays, I have nothing but problems with my hair. My regular shampoo is a cream based formula and as I've read this can sometimes leave build up on your hair, I thought I'd give a clear, clarifying shampoo a go at giving my hair a good clean.

My problem is that I wash my hair the best I can but it never feels properly clean. It always feels a little irritated, greasy or dry - obviously things I want to avoid. I haven't used Herbal Essence for a while, however whilst they were on offer, I stocked up on a few out of their extensive range.

First things first - the packaging is bold and bright and definitely catches your eye. I also like how it's a clear bottle so that you have a good indication about how much product you have left. There's nothing more frustrating than running out of shampoo mid-shower!

The smell of the shampoo and conditioner is divine and unlike my current cream based shampoo, was really easy to lather up. Now I'm constantly confused by hair professionals - is it a good or bad thing for your hair to lather up? Some say your hair isn't clean if it doesn't, however some say this is a ploy by brands to get you to use more product - just the same when they recommend you to shampoo twice. If someone could clear that up for me, that would be great!
After I'd rinsed the shampoo out my hair felt noticeably clean. I could hear it squeaking (again, is this good or bad?) and it felt lovely and lightweight. The conditioner is a lovely thick consistency and seemed to do the job.

When I went to dry my hair I was disappointed with the condition it had left my hair in as it was very knotty, which is something I usually don't experience. My hair felt really rough and I was at this point, really regretting using the products and was in two minds about going to re-wash it. However, after drying it, my hair felt great. It smelt lovely and it was lovely and lightweight which is just what I want.

The next day it was still in a fantastic condition, which is something that rarely happens with me so it saved me a lot of time getting ready. Whilst I recommend this product for a once in a while clean, I don't recommend using it too frequently as I used it again quite soon after my success and it didn't deliver the same results. Would I use this product again? Yes. Was it my favourite shampoo and conditioner? No, but it did impress me with the first use.
