10 Reasons Why January Ain't So Bad

Untitled

The minute the tinsel’s put away and our everyday routines are back in place, out comes the negative vibes. Banish those thoughts and get 2017 off with a bang, because here are 10 Reasons Why January Ain’t So Bad…

A Fresh Start

January is the one month of the year where we start not only a new chapter but a new book too. Mentally we leave everything from the previous year just there and focus on the new, the future and how we can improve and grow. Some make resolutions, some book a holiday they’ve always dreamed of and some completely 180 their lives and go after what they really want, whether that’s a new career path, the person they love or packing up and moving away. Whether or not those resolutions or kept, that career or life change succeeds - it’s a month hope, of ‘anything’s possible’ and that’s pretty damn special.

Winter Really Kicks In

For England we’ve had one of the mildest winters so far. Christmas for me was definitely not cold enough but now we’re getting the real winter chill so let’s wholeheartedly welcome it with open (covered) arms. So it’s time for all things winter to kick in. Think open fires, pub quizzes, crisp winter walks with the dogs and any excuse for a night in or that extra hour under the duvet. It also means that killer coat you got for A/W can come out of your closet and the chunky knits will get their limelight finally.

“Sorry, I’m broke”

You may genuinely be broke but regardless, January is also the one month where that excuse can’t be judged. You may instead be tired or not feeling another bar in the city. Or perhaps you just don’t want to go. Whatever the truth, go home and don’t feel guilty because no-one can judge or argue it.

SALE

Most brands will still be in sale for the remainder of January - heck the majority of further reductions, new lines added and extra discounts happen around now so treat yourself if you have some spare money after Christmas. It’s the time to stock up on big items, book a cheaper holiday or prepare for the season ahead in a new wardrobe. All hail sale.

Food Glorious Food

If you’re from Manchester, January is THE month if you’re into your food because dozens of restaurants are offering 50% off food. So now’s the time to work your way around the Manchester food scene from the quirky bars of the Northern Quarter to the swanky scenery of Spinningfields - grab every group of friends you know, put down the kitchen pans and head out for dinner.

Try Something New

Whilst this can be done any month of the year, a lot of new courses and activities start at the beginning of the year. I already know two people taking this advice. One has just enrolled on a filmmaking course abroad and one has just signed up for a buddhist/meditation programme. I’m personally leaning to getting back into my dancing (I know I said this last year) - in particular ballet, so if you’ve been wanting to try something different, go ahead and do it.

Work It Baby

And I don’t mean the gym. I’m not saying don’t exercise but there’s enough ‘JOIN THE GYM’, ‘WORK OUT’ messages being shoved down our throats this month without me adding to that pile. No, I’m talking about work, your job, your career.

You’ve had a nice Christmas break to relax and unwind with lie ins, long walks and general chill so you should be refreshed and raring to go. Believe you can and you’re halfway there. See obstacles as challenges, find the silver lining in everything and don’t let anyone or anything get in your way. I always used to get told “Don’t come to me with problems, come to me with solutions” and I wholeheartedly agree. Apply this to your life and apply it to work. Show ‘em what you’re made of and mould yourself the career you’ve always dreamed of.

Lights, Camera, Action

It’s award season and with events like the Oscars approaching, the best in film are coming to our silver screens. So get ready to be blown away by cinematography and witness incredible actors, directors and producers.

Back To Routine

Whilst we love a break, there’s something a little satisfying about our everyday routine, what we’re used to know and what we enjoy doing. From going back to work, to weekly lunch dates, our nights out, nights in and everything else in between.

You’re also back to spending five days a week with your colleagues and for me, my best friends. Working with my best friends is an absolute blessing and most nights I have to be dragged away from the people I love. But luckily after 6pm I’m inundated with just as lovely people afterwards.

And finally you’re back to being able to fit in more people this month. December is a social rollercoaster - full of fun but a struggle to please everyone. From Christmas shopping to you and your partner’s Christmas work dos and dinners to dancing, nights out, family nights and that’s not even counting the official celebratory days - there’s barely a free day in December, so welcome January and it’s slightly free-er calendar. I say this, but I’ve already waved goodbye to every weekend this month - time flies when you’re having fun, case in point 2015 went in a blink.

Spring Is In Sight

It’s three months until SPRING PEOPLE. More daylight, evening walks, warmer temperatures - just thinking about it makes me want to fast forward the next 12 weeks, almost…
