Why The Working World Ain't So Bad
Growing up you’re taught to believe that your school or university years are ‘the best days of your life’ and for some that’s true. For me, I didn’t get that. Sure university was fun but I didn’t wholeheartedly enjoy it, and that was partly my own fault. Whilst I gave it my all academically, even writing for the student paper where I won ‘Style writer of the year’, socially, I didn’t get involved, which looking at myself now is ironic since I’m always labelled ‘the girl about town.’
But I can’t change the past but what I have learnt is that the working world ain’t so bad. It really is given a bad reputation. Dolly Parton sings about ‘what a way to make a living’ and how ‘it’s enough to drive you crazy if you let it’ and yes I love that song but the 9-5 is only a drag if you let it be. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you love what you do, it’ll never feel like work and that’s why I always push people to after a job they love, one where they simply can’t wait to jump out of bed in the morning to go forth and do great things.
Other than that you get a steady income so you can treat yourself, go on nice holidays, spoil those you love around you and just basically have the freedom to do what you want, when you want. You also (shouldn’t) have to do too much work outside of office hours, meaning your free time is exactly that. You don’t have a 20,000 word dissertation due on Tuesday and your evenings are longer than you think. You can do an hour at the gym, cook a good dinner and watch a film all before bedtime.
Sure if you’re at university right now, make the most of the partying, lie ins and the extra time but don’t think the fun quits when you start working. I work hard but you can play hard too. I am more social now than ever. I’m immersed in work but also this blog, attending events, seeing the world, going on holidays, seeing my loved ones, keeping up with my hobbies and still fit in quality ‘me time.’ Since graduating I’ve hand on heart had the time of my life.
The only thing that does suck is when it comes to summer and the heatwave days we’ve had recently and being stuck in an office, but you can’t have everything can you…
