2016 has had some stick, and I get it. I could list why but that’s not the point of this post. The point of this post is to take a step back, and I don’t mean literally if you’re in the middle of a road or something, but mentally. When bad things happen it’s easy to think the ‘world’s out to get you’ or 'it’s a (and mind my language here) shit life.’ At the time, it feels like it. But if you’re reading this, here’s another bombshell: you’re alive. And that alone is something to celebrate. You only get one go at this thing called life and here’s a spoiler (well not really): life will test you. It will challenge you, break your heart a million times and see just how you bounce back.
But that’s also the beauty of it. Be redefined, learn from every single day, come back better and stronger. Low points are inevitable and whilst we may not enjoy them, you’ll learn more from those than anything in this world. You can’t have a rainbow without a little rain and you’ll never laugh again until you overcome pain. That rhyme was totally unintended but I’ll take it…
A friend of mine had a really bad start to the year but he told me that despite that, he hasn’t laughed as much in his life as he has done this year. Laughter: it can cure most things. Audrey Hepburn once famously said how she wanted to “spend the rest of my life laughing.” So start right now, don’t even wait until tomorrow, or in this case, 2017.
Find the beauty in everything and it can be as small as someone leaving a note on your desk, reuniting with old friends, going to happy hour, playing your favourite board game, dancing in the rain, watching the sunrise - I think you get where I’m going with this.
So instead of ‘wanting to see the back of this year’ - count your blessings. You’re here on this wonderful earth making memories with those you love. You made it through another 365 days. And you’ll make it through many more I promise you. Follow your heart no matter where that leads. I didn’t follow what I thought was my ‘plan’ and I’m happier than ever. Is my life perfect? Is it hell, but I feel like I’m living a dream. I don’t remember the last time I felt unhappy because I won’t let life win.
So as you’re waving goodbye to 2016 tonight, don’t write it off as all bad, because it wasn’t. There were good days just as much as there were bad days and that’s the secret of life, balance. Learn to ride whatever wave life throws at you with grace and strength. And also learn that ‘going for one drink’ is never one drink, because some things never change no matter the year.
