This one's for you. Fashion's a funny little thing and a while back I had a conversation with someone about this. About whether we feel more passionate about our clothes or the music we listen to. Whilst it depends on the person, music doesn't matter to everyone and that baffles me as those who give their heart to it, they can't imagine their lives then on without it.
For those who feel it, music runs deep. It's there in the darkest times where lyrics can be the reason you lift out from that black hole. They can inspire you, bring back moments and memories and can quite frankly change you. Yet fashion isn't always dealt as fair a hand.
This person remarked how style didn't really affect him, but whether you're conscious of it or not, everyone has a style. We partake in fashion every second of everyday, without even realising it. From our favourite wear around the house jumper, the dress that makes us feel a million dollars and the trainers that have helped you cross many a finish line - you may claim not to care but everyday you get dressed, it affects you.
You'll get to a certain age where you'll be far more sure of your style. You'll look back on outfits that weren't quite right or remember that moment where that dress made you feel you could achieve anything, or heck, you at least got a handful of compliments out of it. But like everything else in life, your style is ever changing and can never fully be defined. Sure, people may ask you to describe it in three words (that old chestnut) but whilst the principles may remain, the chapters will continue to grow.
"Fashion is the most powerful art there is. It's movement, design and architecture all in one. It shows the world who we are and who we'd like to be." Okay, so a fictional character uttered those words, but they still ring true. Your style expresses you who you on the daily. Some days you might want to throw on a full pleated skirt that when you spin you feel young and carefree again and some days you'll want to dress down and throw on your favourite denim.
Sometimes you'll wear that outfit that brings back all of the feelings a la Blair Waldorf in season one where her lace midi gave her the confidence to get up on stage and dance in front of Chuck Bass. I'm not advocating that of course. But then other days you'll not giving a flying sh** about what you're wearing but ironically that is still fashion my friends. It's expressing your mood whether you like it or not.
Style is subjective, it's personal and it's whatever the hell you want it to be. It should be inspiring, comfortable but a whole lot of fun. Wear things because you want to wear them, wear them because you enjoy wearing them or because you feel good in them. Your style is your style, just like your favourite film is your favourite film.
I'm not sure whether that guy ever came around to my way of thinking but he held one hell of a conversation.
